Seasoned TV director OZ Scott (he's helmed everything from The Jeffersons to C.S.I.) tries his hand at B-movie thrills in this cynical, deceit-filled heist drama from 1999. Matthew Lillard (Scream) stars as Jack, a young grifter with 'ulterior motives' written all over him. This naked cunning does not, however, dissuade low-life couple Jamie (Valeria Golino) and Max (Vincent D'Onofrio) from following him blindly into a troubled scheme for riches. Without the dynamite D'Onofrio, the charismatic Lillard, and the ever-hot Golino, Spanish Judges would be about as interesting as drywall. When Lillard and D'Onofrio match wits (or lack thereof), however, there's some real spark. Why these actors rarely appear in anything worthwhile is one of contemporary cinema's great mysteries. Studio Home Entertainment's DVD offers a widescreen transfer (1.85:1) with Dolby 2.0 Surround audio. Trailer, keep-case.
