Red Corner

Hit-and-miss effort starring Richard Gere tells the story of an American lawyer in the People's Republic of China who is framed for a murder and tries to defend himself in a land where justice equals confession. Parts of the story move briskly, and a chase sequence atop the roofs of a Beijing shantytown is well done. In addition, the CGI backgrounds that transport the film to China are an impressive use of the technology (Gere, because of his pro-Tibet politics, cannot enter the PRC). However, a lot of this story could have been cut out, and the conclusion seems ripped from a potboiler paperback. Worth a rental. Good picture and 5.1, informative commentary track with director John Avnet.
