Random Hearts

Random Hearts, Sydney Pollack's cinematic adaptation of Warren Adler's best-selling novel, boasts one of the most unusual premises for a love story ever depicted on the silver screen. After D.C. police sergeant Dutch Van Den Broek (Harrison Ford) and New Hampshire congresswoman Kay Chandler (Kristin Scott Thomas) lose their respective spouses in a plane crash, the pair team up to uncover the truth. Part mystery and part romance, Random Hearts is a fascinating -- if sometimes convoluted -- ride through the world of marital infidelity. Although the story's somewhat implausible ending is easily countered by the undeniable screen chemistry of the two lead actors, some of the film's momentum nonetheless begins to ebb as the movie nears the end of its 133-minute running time, a problem which could have been solved by employing a bit more restraint in the editing room. Columbia TriStar has been generous with the supplemental features on this disc, with the standout offering being the isolated musical score -- Dave Grusin's haunting Chinatown-like melodies are the most beautiful you're likely to hear for some time to come. Also includes an insightful audio commentary track from director Sydney Pollack, a "making-of" featurette, and a Harrison Ford trailer gallery. Nice (but slightly soft) anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) transfer. Keep case.
