The Others: Collector's Series

Nicole Kidman stars in The Others (2001) as Grace, the spooked, and most likely widowed, wartime matron of a remote English manor in 1945. Her young children, Anne and Nicholas, suffer from a rare sensitivity to light, requiring the house to be enshrouded in darkness at all times for their health and safety. When the house's staff mysteriously vanishes without notice, Grace hires a trio of suspicious workers whose arrival coincides with the advent of frightening otherworldly events. The Others is a handsome, splendidly constructed, and solidly acted ghost story that suffers only from following too closely on the heels of the similarly tricky The Sixth Sense. While the movie creates a palpable aesthetic suspense, the inevitable twist ending fails to impact. For some reason, Buena Vista felt it was necessary to release this Dimension Collector's Series item as a two-disc set, despite offering less than 45 minutes of extra features and no commentary with the main feature. The feature is presented in a solid anamorphic transfer (1.85:1) and a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. The second disc contains four featurettes: "A Look Inside the Others," "Visual Effects Piece," "Xeroderma Pigmentosum: What is it?" and "An Intimate Look at Director Alejandro Amenábar". Also included is a still gallery and trailer. Dual-DVD keep-case.
