The Avengers

Shockingly awful. There are plenty of bad films that get made every year, but The Avengers must hold the distinction of the worst film ever made that cost tens of millions of dollars. Based on the classic UK television series, this Hollywood update features a soporific plot that is impossible to follow, two lead characters (played by Ralph Feinnes and Uma Thurman) who are paper-thin and uninteresting, and a saccharine frosting of costumes and special effects that only makes the experience that much more tedious. How wretched is it? Sean Connery, as villainous August de Wynter, is embarrassingly bad, and who ever thought they would say that about him? The Avengers isn't just a cynical exercise in summer box-office spectaculars — it is a film without a soul. Trailer, textual supplements.
