The Apostle: Collector's Edition

Robert Duvall, who wrote, directed, and stars in The Apostle, has described it as a labor of love, and his commitment to this project is immediately evident. Duvall plays Euliss "Sonny" Dewey, a preacher in a large Texas congregation who discovers that his wife (Farrah Fawcett) has been seeing another man. After he attacks his wife's lover in a fit of rage, he flees the state and goes on his "journey." Landing in Louisiana, Sonny changes his name to "The Apostle E.F.," and begins a new church, hoping to save the souls of his congregation, while seeking his own redemption in the process. The Apostle will require some investment from the viewer, but the overall effect is well worth it. Duvall's energetic performance is outstanding, and along with Fawcett, he is joined by English actress Miranda Richardson (The Crying Game), who sports a flawless Kentucky accent, and Billy Bob Thornton in a brief role as a local troublemaker. Collector's Edition extras include a commentary track with Duvall and "Journey of the Apostle," a documentary on the making of the film. Good transfer, Dolby 2.0, trailer.

Editor's Note: Universal's The Apostle: Collector's Edition has been discontinued, but a similar edition has been released by USA Home Entertainment.
